From Cashier to Category Leader: Natasha Brinegar’s 34-Year Journey in Grocery Retail

Career paths to executive leadership are rarely linear, and Natasha Brinegar’s journey reflects how experience, adaptability, and purpose can shape long-term success.

In this episode of Candid with Candidates, Jenn Hahn speaks with Natasha Brinegar, Vice President of Category Management, Meat and Seafood at Food Lion. Natasha offers a comprehensive look at her career progression—from starting as a cashier in high school to leading category strategy across more than 1,100 stores.

Natasha’s career began in store operations, where she developed a strong foundation in customer interaction and retail execution. While she initially pursued a different career path, her exposure to the grocery industry led her to transition into business and ultimately build a long-term career in retail. Over the years, she gained experience across multiple functions, including procurement and merchandising, which provided her with a well-rounded understanding of the business.

Rather than following a strictly upward trajectory, Natasha emphasizes the value of lateral moves. By gaining exposure to different areas of the organization, she developed transferable skills that prepared her for leadership roles. This approach enabled her to build both technical expertise and a broader strategic perspective.

In her current role, Natasha oversees category management for meat and seafood, including assortment planning, pricing strategy, supplier relationships, and merchandising execution. She highlights that while these responsibilities are data-driven, success in the role ultimately depends on people—strong teams, effective collaboration, and meaningful partnerships.

The conversation also explores the importance of taking calculated risks. Natasha shares an example of launching oven-ready meal solutions, a new initiative introduced without certainty of customer response. The positive feedback, including direct communication from customers, reinforced the value of innovation and responsiveness to evolving needs.

Additionally, Natasha reflects on how the grocery industry has evolved, particularly through digital transformation. The integration of e-commerce, personalized customer experiences, and rapid fulfillment expectations has significantly changed how retailers operate and engage with customers.

At the core of Natasha’s leadership philosophy is a strong sense of purpose: serving customers and supporting communities. At Food Lion, this is represented through a clear focus on the customer, which guides decision-making across the organization.

This episode provides valuable insights into leadership development, career growth, and the importance of aligning professional decisions with both purpose and adaptability.
